The time of the Roman empire and its transition from the Roman Republic to the Roman empire creates many options for an interesting read. Within the years between the 3rd and 1st centuries BC Rome expanded into the rest of Italy as well as modern France, Greece and north Africa. The series of alliances and conquests made could create a story based on the strive for power of the leaders of Rome or the lives of the ones conquered and taken into slavery. The battle for power fuelled by ambition and greed after the death of Julius Caesar gives a perfect template for a story of rising to power and being killed by someone who would share the same fate only years later. The gladiator games could inspire an exiting story of life and death of a slave who was given the chance to win glory.
World War 2
The war which consumed the world in the 40’s of the 20th century is well known to everyone who lived after the fact. The War transcended simple military combat and truly effected the majority of the world. From the political conflicts and strive for power in Germany, to the young men and women who were conscripted into the military without any fighting knowledge of skill to the prisoners of war or the citizens of Europe who were forced into concentration or death camps. The real life stories told by the ones who survived it are endless. Story possibilities range from political fighting within the Reichstag to American pilots being tortured within Japanese concentration camps.
Nineteenth century England
Nineteenth century England is a commonly overlooked time period due to the lack of memorable events or exiting wars however the time is full of stories filled with corruption of the wealthy as they would attempt to hide their indulging in pleasures which would destroy their reputation. Poverty filled the streets of London as children were forced into factories because of the industrial revolution. The Jack the Ripper murders could create a gruesome thriller or horror story depicting the victims attempt to escape their death. The British Empire was one of the biggest at the time. Though in the 21st century Britain is commonly looked at as the “good guy” and is looked at as a proper western democratic society it’s past raises some troubling questions. They greatly contributed to the slave trade and forced many countries to act as their colonies denying them their own independence. Britain was one of the most oppressive monarchies in the 1800s and before.
The Spartan era
The time of Greece before the time of the Roman Republic. This could offer a simpler opportunity for a novel or short story. Though political power and fight for power of the Roman republic and empire are interesting the telling of a Sparta inspired military as they destroy all that is ahead of them would create for an interesting read with a back drop of romance. The Trojan war could be an amazing starting point for a novel from either the point of the small folk or the war commanders. Greek Gods could be an inspiration for a fantastical aspect to the story.
The bridge between the middle ages and the modern era. Topics which you can base your story on include: advances in politics with the rise of diplomacy, new painting techniques and styles which created a more realistic appearance, science allowing for us to explore our world in a more educated and logical way and rise of the ideology of humanism. This time period creates interesting possibilities for a story. The idea of a society changing and developing could be applied to many fictional worlds.
